Colombian cyclist Cristian Muñoz died on Friday in Spain following an infection and “medical complications” after a fall on Saturday during the Tour du Jura, his team Nu Colombia announced in a press release.

Cristian Muñoz, aged 31, injured his left knee in his fall. He was treated with antibiotics and stitches before traveling to Spain to accompany his team on the Tour of Asturias.

Nu Colombia team director Raul Mesa explained that, despite the treatment given in France, his leg continued to swell, leading to his admission to hospital in Oviedo, Spain, where a difficult-to-treat infection was detected.

“In the last hours, his state of health worsened and despite all the efforts of the medical team, Cristian died on Friday morning,” his team explained.

The Nu team withdrew from the Tour of Asturias, the second stage of which was held on Friday.
