Instagram and YouTube, found responsible for fueling the depression of an American teenager, were ordered to pay at least $3 million in damages to the plaintiff, according to the reading of the verdict on Wednesday.
The jury of a civil court in Los Angeles also found that Meta, the parent company of Instagram, and YouTube (Google), had acted fraudulently, deliberately, paving the way for additional “punitive damages” which must still be determined after the end of the reading of the verdict.
“The time for accountability has arrived,” responded the plaintiff’s lawyers.
For his part, Meta said he “disagreed” with the verdict, which represents a first in the United States. “We respectfully disagree with the verdict and are reviewing our legal options,” a Meta spokesperson said in a statement.
