Prince Harry is making a surprise visit to Ukraine on Friday to support Ukrainian soldiers injured in the war against Russia, the national railway company, Ukrzaliznytsia, announced.
“Prince Harry, Duke of Sussex, arrived in kyiv by train to see first-hand the destruction caused by Russia’s large-scale invasion of Ukraine and to meet veterans and senior Ukrainian officials,” Ukrzaliznytsia said on its Telegram account.
This is Prince Harry’s second visit to Ukraine this year. In April, specifies Ukrzaliznytsia, he went with his wife Meghan Markle to a rehabilitation center for wounded soldiers in Lviv (west).
This time, according to Ukrzaliznytsia, he is accompanied by a team from his foundation, the Invictus Games Foundation, which he created to support servicemen injured in combat through sports competitions.
Earlier, the British newspaper “The Guardian” reported that Harry had arrived in kyiv aboard a night train early Friday morning, and released photos showing him being greeted as he got off his carriage.
Helping wounded soldiers
His visit to Ukraine coincides with that of the new head of British diplomacy, Yvette Cooper, her first trip abroad since her appointment last week.
“We cannot stop the war (in Ukraine), but what we can do is do everything we can to help the recovery” of injured soldiers, he told the “Guardian”.
According to this source, he is due to meet Ukrainian Prime Minister Yulia Svyrydenko and some 200 veterans.
Harry, who turns 41 on Monday, met his father, King Charles III, for the first time in almost two years during a visit to the United Kingdom earlier this week. They have been at odds for years, over a series of grievances, fueled by the prince’s public criticism of his family.
