Clément Vandenkerckhove, 25, was recognized by Prince Laurent as his son a few weeks ago. Now, it is preparing to also be legally recognized. A decisive step which paves the way for its integration into the royal family. This recognition will allow him to bear the name Van Saksen-Coburg, the title of Prince of Belgium and to be called His Royal Highness. King Philippe, whose brother Prince Laurent is, has already confirmed that he will sign the decree formalizing this new status.
For expert Wim Dehandschutter, this act is not trivial: if Clement caused a scandal, it would now be the image of the entire monarchy which would suffer. Philippe has already noted on numerous occasions that he has no control over Laurent, and he certainly will not have any control over Clément.
Since 2013, King Philippe has strived to close the ranks of the royal house to preserve its prestige. In 2015, he even limited the number of princely titles for future generations. But Clément, born before this reform, benefits from a retroactive right, just like Delphine (adulterine daughter of King Albert II of Belgium) before him.
For the moment, this affair seems to have a positive effect: the king gives the image of a head of state open to “correct legal treatment”, while Laurent appears more human, regaining some public opinion after years of flagging popularity.
