In 2024, Noah, Liam and Matteo were the first names most often allocated to boys newly born in Switzerland. For little girls, parents favored Emma, Mia and Sofia. The male first name Noah retained first place in 2024, after having already occupied it in 2010, 2011, from 2013 to 2017, then from 2021 to 2023, communicates on August 28, the Federal Statistics Office (OFS). Among the girls, Emma resumes her place in the front row in front of Mia. Emma had already been the most popular first name in 2011, 2012, 2014, 2014, 2017, 2018 and 2022. In French -speaking Switzerland, there was a more Gabriel than the Noah last year (130 against 129), while Emma is also the most given first name in the region.
Liora names in girls and Clement in boys are those who have experienced the highest increase in number of ranks. They gained 416 and 259 respectively between 2023 and 2024. During the same period, the first names Isabella and James accused the most dizzying fall, losing 64 and 76 rows respectively. Finally, Mayla and Aurelio are entering the top 100 names of newborns.
Over 50,000 Müller
Müller is the most common surname in the permanent resident population in Switzerland. He is followed by Meier and Schmid. Forming a group of 52,889 people, the Müller (Meier: 32,441 people, Schmid: 30,219 people) represent only 0.6% of the total population (9.05 million). It must be said that the variety of surnames is enormous in Switzerland: the OFS has counted more than half a million family names, the different spellings of the same name being considered separately. Müller is also obviously the most frequent patronym in German -speaking Switzerland (48,889 people).
In French -speaking Switzerland, it is Da Silva who returns most often (10,365 people). This is the case of Bernasconi (2,215 people) in Italian Switzerland and derungs in the Romanche region (231 people).
Within the permanent resident population of Switzerland, Daniel and Maria were the most common names in 2024. If we consider the first names chosen each year, the preferences appear over time. Among people born in 1964, Daniel is the most common in men and Maria in women. In 1984, Michael and Sandra came first while Luca and Laura won the palm in 2004.
