Who will be world champion? All scenarios summarized

Who, the Briton Lando Norris (McLaren), the Dutch title holder Max Verstappen (Red Bull) or the Australian Oscar Piastri will win the world crown in Formula 1? Several scenarios are possible for obtaining the title this Sunday afternoon (2 p.m.) in Abu Dhabi, the last round of the season.

Mathematically, Lando Norris (second on the grid) is the favorite since he is respectively 12 and 16 points ahead of Max Verstappen (pole position) and his teammate Oscar Piastri (third on the grid).

In the event of a tie on points after the race, if none of the three wins the Grand Prix, the Briton would be crowned for the benefit of his eight second places. The trio currently shares the same number of victories (seven each), but the quadruple Dutch world champion has “only” six second places and the Australian four.

In a three-way match, the scenarios are necessarily multiple. Here are the main ones, taking into account the points scale (25 points for the winner, then 18, 15, 12, 10, 8, 6, 4, 2 and 1 for the next nine):

Lando Norris titled

– If he finishes 3rd, it doesn’t matter the result of Verstappen and Piastri.

– If he finishes 5th at worst and Verstappen doesn’t win, it doesn’t matter what Piastri’s result is.

– If he finishes 6th at worst and neither Verstappen nor Piastri wins.

– If he finishes 8th at worst, Verstappen does not do better than 3rd and Piastri does not win

– If he finishes 9th, Verstappen fails to reach the podium and Piastri does not win.

– If he finishes 10th, Verstappen fails at the foot of the podium and Piastri finishes at best 3rd.

– If he does not score points, Verstappen falls short of the podium and Piastri finishes at best 3rd.

Max Verstappen titled

– If he wins, and Norris does not do better than 4th, what does Piastri’s result matter.

– If he finishes 2nd, Norris finishes 8th at best and Piastri does not win.

– If he finishes 3rd, Norris finishes 9th at best and Piastri does not win.

Oscar Piastri titled

– If he wins, and Norris does not do better than 6th, what does Verstappen’s result matter.

– If he finishes 2nd, Norris finishes 10th at best and Verstappen does no better than 4th.
