After hearing how to cry wolf, we ended up stopping believing in it. But this time, it is well and truly over between Gerardo Seoane (46 years old) and Borussia Mönchengladbach. The Lucerne coach, regularly announced in the hot seat since he was on the bench of the German club, was dismissed from his duties this Monday. The news, first announced by German media “Sky Sport” and “Kicker”, quickly became official.
“After an in-depth analysis of our start to the season, we came to the conclusion that a change of head coach was necessary,” responded sporting director Roland Virkus. After 10 Bundesliga matches without a victory, we no longer had confidence in the possibility of a turnaround with Gerardo at the helm of the team.
The “Foals” finished the 2024-2025 season without having won a single one of their last seven matches (2 draws, 5 defeats), before starting the new one with a draw and two defeats. Just as worrying: they haven’t scored a single goal in the league since the beginning of May. The rout suffered against Werder Bremen on Sunday at home (0-4) finally convinced management to activate the ejection seat.
Only 32% victory
While the Bundesliga is only three days old, Gerardo Seoane is already the second coach to be fired, after the Dutchman Erik ten Hag at Bayer Leverkusen. The Swiss, appointed in the spring of 2023, has managed Mönchengladbach 78 times in all competitions, for an insufficient record (only 25 victories against 20 draws and 33 defeats). After a first year finished in 14th place in the championship, the Borussen finished 10th in 2024-2025.
Before Mönchengladbach, Gerardo Seoane had a mixed first experience in Germany, in Leverkusen, where he officiated from July 2021 to October 2022. The result: direct qualification for the Champions League acquired thanks to a good 3rd place, followed by a dismissal the following fall due to a series of poor results.
The Lucerne native especially distinguished himself when he coached Young Boys, between 2018 and 2021, with whom he won three Swiss championship titles.
