A tragedy has just struck the Italian Ski Federation (FISI). She announced it on Monday: Matteo Franzoso died in a hospital in Santiago after falling on Saturday during training on the La Parva track, 50 km from the Chilean capital.
FISI explains on its site that the young man, who was going to celebrate his 26th birthday on Tuesday, “missed the first small jump of the training course and was thrown forward towards the obstacles. He jumped over two rows of nets and hit the barrier located 6-7 meters from the course.
A victory in Switzerland
Immediately taken care of by emergency services, he was airlifted to Santiago where he was admitted to intensive care and placed in an artificial coma. Unfortunately, the consequences of head trauma and brain edema were fatal to the young skier from Sestriere.
In 17 World Cup starts, Matteo Franzoso scored points twice. The last time was this year in Crans-Montana, where he finished 30th in the Super-G. In November 2021, he won his only European Cup victory during the Super-G in Zinal.
This new tragedy comes less than a year after the death of young Matilde Lorenzi (20), who died in October 2024 after a fall while training on the Schnals glacier, in South Tyrol.
