A tragedy occurred Monday morning in Val Rendena, in the Upper Trentino region: figure skating hopeful, licensed at the Sporting Ghiaccio Pinzolo club, Matilda Ferrari (15 years old) lost her life after being hit by a heavy goods vehicle in Giustino, reports La Gazzetta dello Sport.

The young girl was waiting for the bus to go to her high school in Tione. Around 7:15 a.m., while crossing a pedestrian crossing in the company of friends – who escaped unhurt – she was hit by a truck which, according to initial findings, ran a red light and was unable to stop in time.

Despite the rapid intervention of emergency services, local firefighters and a medical helicopter dispatched from Trento, the schoolgirl succumbed to her injuries on the spot. The Carisolo and Madonna di Campiglio carabinieri are leading the investigation to precisely reconstruct the dynamics of the accident.

Second tragedy in a week

Matilda Ferrari had already distinguished herself on Italian and Austrian ice rinks. She won the bronze medal at the Coppa Italia Gold in Bressanone last August, and won the gold medal at the Coppa Veneto in Padua and the Eiscup in Innsbruck in 2024. “We have lost a star,” declared, moved, the mayor of Giustino, Manuel Cosi, expressing the solidarity of his entire town to the family.

This is the second tragedy to shake Italian figure skating in a week. On September 11, Julia Marie Gaiser also died after being hit by a truck in Salzburg.

In 2024, in Italy, 470 people died on the roads in accidents involving pedestrians. 69 of them were mowed down by heavy goods vehicles.
