The campus of St. Olaf College, Minnesota, is plunged into sadness after the sudden death of Matthew Lee (20), player of the university American football team. The student was shot and killed Friday night in a shooting that rocked his hometown of South St. Paul.
A native of this south Minneapolis community, Lee was considered an exemplary student and all-around athlete. “He was a leader, an excellent student and an accomplished athlete. He had overcome many challenges and always gave the best of himself,” his coach James Kilian told the television channel. CBS News.
According to the first elements reported by the Star TribuneLee reportedly played no role in the altercation. He would have simply been a passerby caught in an exchange of gunfire between two men. The police quickly arrested a 19-year-old suspect, Terrell Anthony Ranzy, who was arrested just a few blocks from the incident. He is now facing charges of second-degree murder, manslaughter and illegal possession of a firearm.
“He had earned everyone’s esteem”
Injured in the knee the previous season, Lee was only able to play two matches. Despite this setback, he stood out for his combativeness and commitment, both on and off the field. “He came to work every day with enthusiasm, he had earned everyone’s esteem,” insisted his coach, still in shock.
Victorious in its first game of the season, the St. Olaf team was having a week off when tragedy struck.
