Frenchman Frédéric Vasseur has extended his contract for several years at the head of the Ferrari stable, the Italian Formula 1 stable announced on Thursday in a press release.
Having become a boss of the Scuderia in 2023, the experienced leader was at the heart of rumors, the Italian press presenting him on departure due to a disappointing first half of the season. The Frenchman had been publicly supported by his pilots, the Monegasque Charles Leclerc and the British Lewis Hamilton.
Thursday, Ferrari therefore ended uncertainty by extending Vasseur as a main team “for the formula 1 seasons to come”.
“Today, we want to recognize what has been built and fully commit to what remains to be accomplished,” said Benedetto Vigna, the CEO of Ferrari, quoted in the press release. This reflects our confidence in Fred leadership – a confidence based on a shared ambition, mutual expectations and a clear sense of responsibility ”.
If Ferrari still holds the record for the number of world champion titles among the manufacturers, the last dates back to 2008 and the tifosi is getting impatient. The last coronation in red pilots dates back to 2007 with Kimi Raïkkonen.
In the shadow of McLaren
“Recognizing confidence” that Ferrari grants him, Vasseur talks about the “challenge” that awaits him after “laying solid foundations” during his first 30 months at the controls. Vasseur now wants to “cross the next step” and “meet expectations” of supporters and the management of Ferrari.
But the title 2025 already seems to be promised in McLaren, ultra-dominant this year: Oscar Piastri and Lando Norris are several lengths ahead of competition. Leclerc and Hamilton are only 5th and 6th in the ranking. Among manufacturers, Ferrari is second, but McLaren is out of reach with 268 points ahead.
