Former Brazilian president Jair Bolsonaro, sentenced last week to 27 years in prison for attempted coup, has skin cancer, said one of his doctors on Wednesday.
A biopsy of skin lesions has made it possible to detect a “squamous cell carcinoma”, that is to say “a type of skin cancer that can have more serious consequences,” the journalists the Doctor Claudio Birolini.
Assigned to house arrest since the beginning of August, Mr. Bolsonaro, 70, was released on Wednesday afternoon of the private clinic DF Star in Brasilia, where he had been admitted the day before after a discomfort, noted an AFP photographer.
According to the DF Star medical bulletin, the biopsy detected carcinoma in “two of the eight lesions” removed during a previous short passage in this same clinic on Sunday.
No chemotherapy for the moment
This diagnosis requires “medical follow -up and periodic reassessments”, said the hospital statement. But Doctor Birolini said that the ex-president should not follow at the moment of “active treatment” such as chemotherapy.
The ex-president (2019-2022) was admitted to the DF Star clinic on Tuesday after discomfort, his family having reported vomiting, a “more severe episode” of hiccups and a drop in blood pressure.
He suffers from various health problems, some of which derive the consequences of a stabbing attack suffered in 2018, which has earned him several operations in recent years.
After spending the night under observation, he presented an “improvement in symptoms (vomiting and dropping pressure) and its renal function after an intravenous medical treatment”, according to the medical bulletin.
The Supreme Court condemned Jair Bolsonaro to 27 years’ imprisonment at the end of a historic trial which found him guilty of conspired to maintain himself in power, despite his electoral defeat against the current left president Luiz Inacio Lula da Silva in 2022.
But it can only be imprisoned after the exhaustion of all possible appeals, and its defense has already announced that it would appeal soon.
