End of series for Marc Marquez! The Ducati pilot, who remained on 15 consecutive victories, saw this dynamic interrupting his land, in Catalonia, where his brother Alex Marquez (Ducati-Gresini) won Sunday during the Grand Prix.
Starting in pole position, Alex Marquez had solid nerves and made a superb race to hold the dragee high to his older brother. Preventing the latter from obtaining a first “match ball” next weekend during the Saint-Marin GP in Misano. Marc Marquez, very close to winning a seventh title of world champion which would allow him to match his great Italian rival Valentino Rossi, will indeed have to wait at least until Japan at the end of the month to win the title.
The Spaniard had however taken the best start by leaving the first turn, followed by his brother and a third Spaniard, Pedro Acosta (KTM). But Alex quickly exceeded his older brother and, even if he never managed to really distance him, he held out to win the second Grand Prix of his career after Jerez in April, when he took advantage of Marc’s fall to win.
Spectacular rise of Francesco Bagnaia
The podium is completed by the Italian Enea Bastiannini, who offered an unexpected podium to the French team KTM-Tech3 under the eyes of his future Italian-American boss Günther Steiner. The former director of the Haas team in F1 announced Friday that it had completed the acquisition of the French team Hervé Poncharal.
Acosta, the only one to have chosen a tender tire on the back, had to settle for 4th place after being 3rd during two thirds of the race. The Frenchman Fabio Quartararo, 2nd on the grid and which had taken a superb 2nd place on Saturday during the sprint, finished 5th after having resisted the handlebars of his Yamaha.
The rise of the day is to be put to the assets of Francesco Bagnaia (Ducati). The double Italian world champion, which started in 21st position after catastrophic qualifications, managed to finish in 7th place.
