The Danish government announced on Wednesday that it was going to buy long -range precision weapons for the first time to strengthen its deterrence, judging that the Russian threat was going to weigh on Europe for a long time. “Russia is going to be a threat to Denmark and Europe for many years,” said Prime Minister, says Frederiksen at a press conference.

Copenhagen will notably buy drones and missiles, which some of its allies in NATO “have or are acquiring,” said Defense Minister Troels Lund Poulsen. The type of weapons has not yet been determined.

“Paradigm change”

“Thanks to these weapons, the defense will be able to reach targets at great distance and, for example, neutralize threats of enemy missiles,” added the head of the government. It spoke of the possibility of “neutralizing missile guide ramps and infrastructure for planes and drones”. “This is a paradigm shift in Danish defense policy,” said Frederiksen.

This announcement must contribute to NATO’s ambition that Europe can defend itself by 2030 at the latest, said Foreign Minister Lars Lars Løkke Rasmussen.

The Russian ambassador to Denmark, Vladimir Barbin, described as “pure madness” the Danish justification that it is necessary to be able to strike distant targets. “No one, nowhere, never in the world, has considering publicly threatening nuclear power. These declarations will undoubtedly be taken into account, “said Barbin in a statement published on Telegram.
