In 2022, 71% of the Swiss population described the health of their mouths as good to very good. Women say that 74% say, compared to 68% for men, according to the Federal Statistical Office. The share also varies according to the level of training: 75% of people who completed tertiary training declare a good good condition of oral health against 68% of those with a secondary degree training II and 55% of those without post-compliance training.
In 2022, 44% of the population had complete natural dentition. In 2002, it was only 33%. This progress is valid in particular for women. Having a complete natural dentition is very variable depending on the level of training. Between 25 and 64, the higher the level of training, the greater the proportion of people with full natural dentition. In this age group, only 25% of people without post-compliance training have a complete natural dentition against 45% of those who completed secondary degree training II and 56% of those before tertiary training. These social differences have been stable since 2002.
In twenty years, visits to the dental hygienist have intensified while those in the dentist have decreased. The share of the population which went to the dental hygienist during a year increased by 21%(2002: 37%; 2022: 58%) while the one who consulted a dentist fell by 6%(2002: 62%; 2022: 56%). Overall, almost three -quarters of the population have used medicine and/or dental hygiene treatments (74%).
Again, the higher the level of training, the more the share of people who make an annual visit to the hygienist is high. 66% of those who completed tertiary training went to the hygienist against 43% of those without post-compliance training.
The devices are popular
In 2022, 35% of the population had already worn a dental apparatus once in their life. This share has been constantly increasing for twenty years (2002: 23%; 2012: 28%;). It is the young people who most often use dental devices: more than half of people aged 15 to 39 have or have already worn a dental apparatus (54%).
Orthodontics is also a reflection of marked social differences. The higher the level of training, the frequent the use of dental devices. The gap has been dug over time. Because, if the use of orthodontics increased by 15% in twenty years for people with tertiary training and 8% for those with secondary II training, there is no significant increase for people without post-compliance.
