Queen Margrethe, who renounced the throne of Denmark last year, was hospitalized for a cold, the royal house announced on Thursday.
“Due to the cold that His Majesty the Queen Margrethe contracted, it was decided that the queen would be placed as a precaution in observation at the Rigshospitalet”, the main hospital in Copenhagen, the court said in a laconic statement.
No other information has been made public.
85 years on April 16
Queen Margrethe, who celebrated her 85th birthday on April 16, appeared in public for the last time Sunday during a religious service on the occasion of the celebration of the 80th anniversary of the Liberation of Denmark.
The former Sovereraine, who reigned 52 years on the Scandinavian country before giving in the throne in January 2024 to his eldest son Frederik, has multiplied health problems for a few years.
In the fall, she had already been hospitalized for a few days because of a fall. It was a heavy back operation in 2023 which had decided her to abdicate although she assured before she stayed on the throne “until falling”.
Extremely popular in Denmark, Margrethe is particularly paid into the arts. She won the Danish Oscar of the best costumes in 2024, translated plays, whose “all men are mortal” by Simone de Beauvoir with the late her husband the prince consort Henrik, under a pseudonym and illustrated several books, including “The Lord of the Rings” by Jrr Tolkien.
