Reported by Howard County Department of Fire and Rescue Services:

At 4:30 pm (March 17th), firefighters were alerted to the 1200 block of Long Corner Road in Mt. Airy for a house fire. Upon arrival, crews found heavy fire from a detached garage. The fire had extended to the rear of the structure, resulting in a brush fire behind the building.

There was an initial report of an occupant trapped in the garage. That resident evacuated prior to fire department arrival and was transported to a local hospital for smoke inhalation.

While working on the scene, a small portion of building material from the garage fell onto a firefighter. They were transported to a local hospital with minor injuries.

Mutual aide was provided by Frederick, Carroll, and Montgomery Counties. The cause of the fire is under investigation by the Office of the Fire Marshal.
