If you have driven by a gas station recently you have probably noticed the price of gas has been increasing. At this point we have had a number of price fluctuations (up and down) so the fact it has been going up again should not be a big shock. The amount the prices have risen recently caught the attention of The Observer so I wanted to share the data with the readers.

Let’s start with how much the price of gas has risen recently: Over the past month gas prices have gone from $3.058 to $3.336 (state average for regular gas in Maryland – per AAA). That is an increase of $0.278 per gallon over the past month for the state average.

Next let’s look at average price of gas in Maryland vs average price of gas across the nation: In Maryland today the average price of gas is $3.336 and the average price of gas across the nation is $3.256. This make Maryland $0.080 higher than the national average. Maryland currently ranks as the 10th highest average price of gas in the nation (Hawaii is the highest at $4.705).

Looking at Carroll County gas prices: If you have ever read any of the past reporting on this topic (gas prices) from The Observer you may remember Carroll County is generally below the statewide average. Today the average price of gas in Carroll County is $3.354 making it $0.018 higher than the state average.

AAA does not provide history data per jurisdiction/county so I do not have the data to show over time for Carroll County.

Looking at all of the jurisdictions The Observer is currently reporting on (sorted lowest to highest average price today)

  • Baltimore County: $3.339
  • Frederick County: $3.353
  • Carroll County: $3.354
  • Howard County: $3.369

Note: For those that live close the the Baltimore County line it might be worth driving across the county line to save nearly a couple of pennies on each gallon gas.

Back on February 8th AAA published this article “ROSES ARE RED, VIOLETS ARE BLUE – OIL COSTS TICK UP AND GAS PRICES TOO“. Noted in that article:

“However, seasonal demand trends, higher costs for oil, and routine refinery maintenance will likely push pump prices slowly higher soon.”

and

“But gas prices will likely start increasing around Valentine’s Day.”

Just something to watch for the readers because as gas prices go up…it is possible the prices of other items will go up as well.

According to Gas Buddy…the cheapest gas in Carroll County today is:

  • BJ’s in Westminster (820 Market St) at $3.02 per gallon.

Let’s all hope this is temporary and we see a decrease again in the near future.
