The September 2022 voter registration data for the state of Maryland was recently released and I thought this would be a good time to update followers in Carroll County on the data as we approach the 2022 General Election (November 8, 2022).
Here is a basic summary of the latest registration data for Carroll County:

- Registered Other: 31,011 | 23.99% of registered voters

Here is a look at how voter registration in Carroll County has changed over the past 6 months:
Since April 2022:
- Democratic registration has gained 271 voters but dropped 0.12% of overall voters in the county.
- Republican registration has gained 1,147 voters and gained 0.15% of overall voters in the county.
- Other party registrations have gained 406 voters but dropped 0.04% of overall voters in the county.
I believe you can count some of the rise in Republican registrations in part due to the lack of other party candidates running in the 2022 Primary in Carroll County (only 1 Democrat running for 1 office in the entire county during the 2022 Primary). In our closed primary system I know that at least “some” registered Democrats and Independents had changed their registration in order to participate in the 2022 Primary.
Here is a look at a more long range trend of voter registrations in Carroll County (2017 – 2022):
Between Jan 2017 and Jan 2022:
- Democratic registration has gained 1,208 voters but dropped 0.29% of overall voters in the county.
- Republican registration has lost 234 voters and and dropped 2.62% of overall voters in the county.
- Other party registrations have gained 4,952 voters and gained 2.91% of overall voters in the county.
It is clear that voters registering as other than Democrat or Republican (primarily Unaffiliated / Independent) is significantly on the rise since 2017 and as of September 2022 makes up nearly 24% of all registered voters in the county.
